Beenie, Destra to ‘behave badly’
SELF-PROCLAIMED King of the Dancehall Beenie Man and Queen of Bacchanal Destra Garcia are expected to grace the stage at Bad Behaviour: The Best of Dancehall vs the Best of Soca at the Ocean Village Car Park in Ocho Rios, St Ann, tonight.
“Soca is no longer seasonal in Jamaica, which says a lot for the growth in its popularity here, and Bad Behaviour has been long committed to providing the best musical acts across a wide cross section of genres,” David Lyons, marketing manager of the event, told the Jamaica Observer.
Beenie Man celebrated 40 years in dancehall earlier this year, cementing his legacy as one of the genre’s most enduring icons with multiple hits across the decades. Known as the consummate showman, he has a large catalogue of fan favourites to dive into. He indicated his pleasure at performing for his north coast fans and alongside Destra.
Trinbagonian Destra has garnered her title in a similar manner, championing soca music wherever she performs, with a string of international and regional hits. The pair will be joined by Presley Hype and Team No Sleep on the turntables.
“We were happy to get Destra as there aren’t a lot of soca-themed events in Ocho Rios, especially outside of Carnival season,” Lyons explained.
This evening’s event will mark the first Bad Behaviour party for the year. However, the series goes as far back as 2007 featuring a wide range of dancehall acts such as Dexta Daps, Spice and Capleton. Its continued success in Ocho Rios and its neighbouring environs sees Bad Behaviour move from its long-time home Margaritaville, inside Island Village to the Ocean Village Car Park.
“Ocho Rios has always embraced Bad Behaviour and this has facilitated the move as we’ve outgrown the previous venue. This way patrons will experience an expansion of everything,” Lyons added.
