JPS appeals for help to stop vandalism of transformers
THE Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) says there have been more than 30 incidents of vandalism of its transformers in the parish of St Catherine in recent weeks.
According to the light and power company, the transformers are being cut open and the core extracted, for purposes which are yet to be ascertained.
“The areas affected by this unlawful activity are Bernard Lodge, Salt Pond Road, Dunbeholden and Port Henderson Road in Portmore. The vandalism of the transformers has resulted in loss of electricity and sometimes water supplies, for several hours in varying locations in the Portmore municipality,” a JPS release said.
The company said it has so far spent approximately $8 million to replace the vandalised transformers.
The company said that while it is working alongside the police in dealing with the problem, it is appealing to the public to be vigilant in their communities and report any strange activity around JPS infrastructure, especially at night.
Persons were asked to report any unusual activity to the nearest police station, or JPS by calling 888-CALL-JPS (888-225-5577). In addition, reports can be made to the company’s social media platforms @myjpsonline, or by emailing calljps@jpsco.com. All reports will be treated confidentially, said the company.
