Wolmer’s Boys’ School placed a stranglehold on Group G with a 2-1 win over Holy Trinity High in their top-of-the-table clash at Santos field yesterday.
Wolmer’s, with their sixth win from seven games, have opened up a four-point lead atop the group on 19 points. Holy Trinity, who were losing their second match of the season, and both times to Wolmer’s, stayed second on 15 points with three sets of games remaining.
Third-placed Edith Dalton James clipped Jose Marti 1-0 and moved to 13 points, while Waterford stayed in fourth on six points following their 0-0 draw with Pembroke Hall, who are a point behind in fifth spot. Jose Marti are rooted to the bottom after picking up their first point of the season.
With the Santos facility bursting at the seams, home team Holy Trinity and Wolmer’s Boys’ battled for supremacy in an entertaining game that could have gone either way.
Rivaldo English gave Wolmer’s a 45th-minute lead, latching onto a long ball and slotting past the advancing goalkeeper Stephon Lindsay despite a valiant effort from defender Ricardo Dixon to prevent the ball from trickling into the net.
Holy Trinity struck back with the goal of the match as Phillon Lawrence swivelled and volleyed home from just inside the box in the 68th minute. But Wolmer’s restored their advantage through the lanky Clayone Haynes in the 71st minute.
It was the second time Wolmer’s were defeating Holy Trinity 2-1 although with a little more luck the home team could have won, having hit the crossbar three times in a five-minute spell of sustained pressure.
Winning coach Alex Thomas said he expected a tough game from Holy Trinity but his team showed grit in securing the victory.
“We are happy with the game as we stuck to our objectives in a tough game and I have to praise our boys. The aim is to top the zone and reach the Champions Cup; it’s just one game at a time,” said Thomas.
Meanwhile Devon Anderson, coach of Holy Trinity, was again displeased with the officiating but had high praises for his team.
“We have heart, despite the calls against us, the non-calls, we are still fighting. Kudos to my boys; I will go to war with them any day. We leave it all on the field and that’s all I ask for, not for other elements to decide the game,” said Anderson.
“The performance was kind of lacklustre where we are concerned we could have finished some half chances, hitting the bar three times. I guess today just wasn’t our day,” he noted.
