Kingston celebrates Oktoberfest on Oct 5
Jamaica’s renowned version of the Bavarian/German Oktoberfest will be held on Friday, October 5, at the Alhambra Inn in Kingston. The occasion will bring the curtains down on The Jamaican German Society’s (JGS) Germany Week 2018, which began yesterday.
Kingston’s Oktoberfest has been hosted annually by the JGS as the flagship event of the cultural society and this year, as customary, will include German-style cuisine accompanied by some 14 different types of German and local beer on offer. Along with special prizes and surprises, there will also be the usual games and merry-making accompanied by both local and Bavarian music.
Germany Week this year will feature an Open House event each evening, beginning at 6:30, at the society’s headquarters at 5 East Avenue during which German movies with English subtitles will be screened free of cost.
Oktoberfest originated with the wedding celebrations of the Bavarian King, Ludwig V and has evolved into a major beer festival. It is celebrated internationally by people with an interest in German culture.
The Jamaican German Society, which prides itself on being Jamaica’s first friendship association of its kind, works in close collaboration with the German Embassy in Kingston as it continues to pursue its mission which, principally, is the promotion of German culture and language in Jamaica, while its sister organisation, the German-Jamaican Society, headquartered in Bonn, promotes Jamaican culture in Germany.
