Waterhouse hammer Harbour View 4-0 for biggest win of RSPL season
A Girvon Brown brace and individual goals from Rafiek Thomas and Denardo Thomas inspired Waterhouse FC to a 4-0 hammering of Harbour View FC in the Red Stripe Premier League on Sunday.
It was the biggest margin of victory by any team so far this season.
After a fairly tame start to the game, Waterhouse scored with their very first look on goal when former Boys’ Town player Rafiek Thomas found the back of the net in the ninth minute. The veteran striker took an extra touch in the box to put a defender on his haunches before calmly slotting the ball into the far corner from the right side of the box. There was absolutely nothing the Harbour View custodian Christian Kluvis could do about it.
The powerfully built Stephen Williams then tested Kluvis with a torrid strike from distance but the goalkeeper went down smartly to his left to deny the midfielder.
Harbour View enjoyed good possession of the ball through the likes of Peter-Lee Vassell and Tyreek Magee but not in the critical areas of the field.
Bebeto McDonald tried to beat Gregory Haughton at his near post but the goalkeeper was equal to the task.
The Waterhouse custodian who had been fairly easy all night was then called upon when Dario Stewart unleashed a ferocious drive from distance. The shot had Haughton in all sorts of trouble and he spilled the ball that fell to the feet of McDonald who skied the bouncing ball over the crossbar from 10 yards.
Harbour View were still in the game at half- time but the match was over as a contest three minutes after the restart.
Almost from the kick-off, Kenroy Howell gathered the ball and ran almost half the pitch past a sleeping Harbour View defence before rolling the ball to Brown who slotted home to make it 2-0 in the 46th minute.
Three minutes later Brown was on the score sheet again, when he scored another sitter. Williams avoided a tackle on the right flank before racing into the box and centring to an unmarked Brown who simply could not miss. It was the third goal of the season for Brown.
Nine minutes later defender Denardo Thomas dealt the hammer blow to the visitors when he rose highest to head home a corner kick from substitute Mark Miller to make it 4-0 in the 59th minute.
Harbour View failed to muster anything offensively for the rest of the game on a miserable night for the “Stars of the East” as they suffered their second loss of the season.
Waterhouse assistant coach Akino Morgan praised the work rate of his players.
“Let me applaud the guys, excellent work tonight. They came out and they stick to the game plan and they worked their socks off.”
Morgan said his boys got the tactics correct which virtually assured them of the victory.
“We forced them not to play through the middle and to go to our flanks and put in the crosses. We are not surprised by the margin of victory based on how well we trained this week. We created a lot of chances tonight that we could have won the game by even six or seven nil,” he concluded.
Harbour View’s Fabian Taylor was bitterly disappointed with the defensive effort of his team.
“This is a very difficult result to take home. I think the guys didn’t turn up today at all. We talk about switching on and staying compact and none of that we did tonight, hence we lapsed in defence and we gave up some goals.”
Despite the disappointment Taylor recognises that all is not lost and is adamant that a turnaround will occur soon.
“We have to go back to the training ground and work hard and believe in ourselves as players and as coaches. We at Harbour View we don’t expect results like these and when these results happen we can only get better now.”
