NFL 2018/19 – WEEK 5 – Season calming down as Drew Brees seeks history
After four weeks and 63 games, the NFL season has typically been running true to form. There have been 38 home wins, 23 away wins and two tied games in what is shaping up to be a stellar year.
In Week 4 the Chicago Bears established themselves as genuine contenders after demolishing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 48-10, while the Dallas Cowboys and Tennessee Titans had pivotal wins against the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles, respectively. The New England Patriots re-established themselves in the AFC East after outclassing the Miami Dolphins 38-7, the Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs remained undefeated, while the Arizona Cardinals are yet to register a win.
In a year where the second-year starting quarter back (QB) for the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes, has already thrown for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is standing at the edge of greatness. Brees, at just six feet tall, was barely recruited in high school but is now 201 yards away from becoming the NFL’s all-time passing leader. The current record is 71,940 yards, held by Peyton Manning. The Saints take on the Washington Redskins on Monday night and should see Brees surpassing the required 201-yard target.
Drew Brees plays before his home-fans on prime time and they, for sure, are going to set the stage for this record-breaking effort. He set the NFL record for single-season completion percentage (70.6) in 2009 — a record he later bettered in 2011 (71.2) and again in 2017 (72). Brees also ranks first in NFL history for career completion percentage at 67.1 per cent and, in 2011, guided the Saints’ offence to 7,474 total yards — an NFL record that stands to this day.
The Redskins had their bye-week in Week 4 but will find it all to do in Week 5. With the backdrop of Drew Brees making history and the return of running back (RB) Mark Ingram from suspension (to join forces with league-leading RB Alvin Kamara), it’s hard to visualise a New Orleans loss.
Outside of the obvious ‘history-in-the-making’ game, the matchups between the Kansas City Chiefs (4-0) vs the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-1) and the Philadelphia Eagles (2-2) vs the Minnesota Vikings (1-2-1) promise to be phenomenal. The outcome of the Chiefs vs Jaguars clash will help define the look of the AFC and should display the true prowess of the Kansas City offence. Both the Eagles and the Vikings have been underperforming this season and are almost in a do-or-die situation. The good thing for both teams is that, besides the LA Rams, the NFC is still up for grabs and they will be using this opportunity to make a step in the right direction. Philadelphia’s home field advantage should give them the edge, but they need to correct vulnerabilities displayed in their narrow 26-23 loss to the Tennessee Titans last weekend. There was excessive pressure on QB Carson Wentz (11 hits, four sacks) and too many big plays given up defensively.
The Vikings will have their shot at revenge after getting destroyed 38-7 in the NFC Championship game last January, but it will be an uphill task as the Eagles almost never lose at home.
The New England Patriots made strides in the right direction in Week 4 but made very little dent in JustBet’s adjustments in the odds being offered for the Super Bowl winner. The LA Rams have improved to a 4-0 record and are still the JustBet favourite at $4.10. The New England Patriots are looking more attractive as $7.25 second favourites. The impressive Kansas City Chiefs have maintained their third-favourite spot at $9.00, while the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars move into the frame at $10.00 and $11.00 respectively.
