Singer Oquino (formerly known as Jah Cube) says his Canadian chart-topper Why You Do Me That was inspired by a real-life situation.

“It is based on a true story. A friend of mine was going through a situation, and the circumstances inspired me to write this song, Oquino told the Jamaica Observer in an interview.

Why You Do Me That was produced by J Small Records.  It recently spent several weeks at the top of the Reggae Vibez Canadian Reggae Chart, which airs on Canada’s urban alternative radio station VIBE105 FM. The singer says he is quite pleased with the song’s reception.

Oquino, who has been recording professionally since 2003, explained his decision to change his name from Jah Cube.

“Oquino is my middle name and I decided to use it professionally because my previous name was too similar to that of another artiste.  When persons research my name on the Internet, they were always pulling up someone else’s name,” said Oquino.

He was born Dwayne Oquino Fullerton in Kingston. It was after he entered and won a talent competition in Jamaica that he decided to follow his musical pursuits.

 He moved to Toronto, Canada, more than 20 years ago.   

He spoke about one of the highlights of his career:

“I would say the biggest highlight for me was performing at the Montreal Reggae Festival alongside Jimmy Cliff and Tarrus Riley. It was a good look for my career,” he said.

 Oquino has worked with producers including Karl Morrison.

“I bring a positive energy and awareness to the societal issues that we are facing. That to me sets me apart from the pack,” he explained.
