Bigdaddykool a firm fancy for Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup

Despite not having raced in 107 days due to injury setbacks, Bigdaddykool should be more than comfortable on his return to brush aside rivals in the $1.15-million Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup feature at Caymanas Park today.

It has been a very long time since Bigdaddykool has raced at the Open Allowance level, and even with his time out of competitive racing, he is still much better than these and is expected to come home ahead easily in this Cup race.

The three-year-olds and upward event over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m) is set to go to post at 4:35 pm, with the first race at 11:20 am.

Bigdaddykool has raced only two times this season, finishing in third place on both occasions. The far-striding bay gelding was three and a quarter lengths adrift of Will In Charge and Seeking My Dream in the seven-and-a-half furlong (1,500m) Chairman’s Trophy on June 9. Then Bigdaddykool was four lengths behind Houdini’s Magic and Dontae in the nine-furlong (1,800) The Viceroy Trophy on June 30.

If Bigdaddykool is anywhere near that form then this race should be easy for the Anthony Nunes trainee. The one draw might pose an issue, but if he is fit and ready Bigdaddykool is going to be unsaddled in the winners’ enclosure.

Horses expected to be competitive are Marquesas, Superluminal and Dysfunctional, while the others in the race — Uncle Frank, Lightning Lily, Tarrantino, Donate and Hover Craft are more than likely to make their presence felt.

Running at the Open Allowance level for the first time, Marquesas was just beaten by his fellow three-year-old Fayrouz on last. The Michael Marlowe trainee has shown improvement of late but should play second fiddle to the more accomplished Bigdaddykool.

Superluminal is as consistent as they come. He has proven to be a good two-turn horse with his last four runs being around the circular course in which he won once, finished second two times, and third once. He is more than comfortable here and another capital effort is expected from the Ian Parsard-trained six-year-old bay horse.

On last, Dysfunctional ran a really good race to finish second behind stable companion Perfect Neighbour in the Governor General’s Stakes on September 22. The five-year-old bay gelding has been quietly sneaking up the ranks and with this race to his liking, if Bigdaddykool slips up then Dysfunctional has a real chance of winning.

Also on tap on the 11-race programme are the Heroes Day Stakes Trophy and the Norman Manley Memorial Cup.

In the Heroes’ Day Stakes Trophy over a mile (1,600m), Subbie, who has finished in second place in his last three races, should go one better at the expense of his stable companion Uncle Vinnie, Musketoon and Storm Valley.

Then Milagro should win the five-furlong (1,000m) round Norman Manley Memorial Cup over Pizarro, Fortuneonehundred and Cruising Motion.
