KINGSTON, Jamaica — President, University of Technology, Jamaica, Professor Stephen Vasciannie, has announced the appointment of Sri Lankan attorney-at-law, educator and human rights advocate Dr Prathiba Mahanamahewa as Dean of the university’s Faculty of Law with effect from October 8, 2018.

According to a release from the Papine, St Andrew-based university, the appointment is for one term, ending on October 7, 2022.

Mahanamahewa holds Doctorate, Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Law from the University of Queensland (Australia), University of Melbourne (Australia) and the University of Colombo (Sri Lanka), respectively. He is an attorney-at-law in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and has membership in the International and the Sri Lanka Bar Association.

He was senior lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Colombo in Sri Lanka.

A former Human Rights Commissioner of Sri Lanka, he represented the World Sri Lankan Association in the recently concluded 39th Session of The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.

Vasciannie, in welcoming Mahanamahewa said that “I am happy that Dr Mahanamahewa has accepted the university’s offer to serve as Dean of the Faculty of Law. He brings to the university a wealth of scholarly experience and a strong record in academic leadership in the field of law. I am confident that he will make an invaluable contribution to advancing the Faculty of Law’s mission in teaching, research and service.”
