LUCEA, Hanover — Superintendent of police in charge of the Hanover Police Division Sharon Beeput and Cornwall College student, Darien Streete were among 27 individuals recognised at the parish’s annual National Heroes Day Civic and Awards ceremony hosted by the Hanover Municipal Corporation in collaboration with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission in Lucea, Hanover, on Monday.

The 27 were recognised for their contribution to the parish in the areas of community service, public service, agriculture, health, education, sports, and entrepreneurship.

Superintendent Beeput, a 20-year veteran in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, was awarded in the area of public service.

In a citation read at the ceremony, the senior policewoman was described as “one who gives a listening ear to her colleagues, the public and prisoners alike”.

She has also been accredited for lifting the morale and efficiency of members of the Hanover Police Division.

Streete, a certified child preacher, was presented with the Hanover Youth Ambassador award.

Over the years, Streete has won numerous awards.

He was the 2011 Spelling Bee top boy for Hanover, 2012 Butterkist Mathematics parish champion; 2012 Bethel Primary and Junior High top Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) achiever; 2012 PetroCaribe GSAT scholarship recipient; 2013 Cornwall College grade 7 reading competition champion; the 2014, 2016 and 2018 Jamaica Library Service National reading competition parish champion.

He also has distinctions in 10 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate subjects.

Among the other awardees were seven young men who were recognised for risking their lives to save a mother and her 10- month-old child who were trapped inside their house by raging flood waters after the Cove River overflow its banks, in May.

Lilieth Stenneth, Jermaine Williams, Donovan Hamilton, Ewart CW Grant, Edith Gordon, Allaine Harvey, Ivett Grant, and Hanover’s largest supermarket, Cherries Supermarket, were recognised in the area of community service.

Bryan Clarke, Lloyd Hill and Donovan McLaren were awarded in the field of public service, while Lancelot E Reid and Andrea Lee were awarded in the field of entrepreneurship.

Other awardees were Karel Samuels, for education; Michael McIntosh, sports; Easton Frazer, agriculture; and Denise Malcolm and Vivenne Reid-McLeod for health.
