Our race plan – trainer Robert Pearson
FOLLOWING the dominating performance by Will In Charge to win the 46th running of the $3-million Cal’s Tomato Ketchup Gold Cup on Saturday, trainer Robert Pearson’s confidence could not be higher as he now targets the Superstakes and the Diamond Mile.
The Superstakes is set for November 10 and will run over 10 furlongs (2,000m), while the Diamond Mile has a December 1 date and carries a purse of US$115,000.
“It was an excellent performance by Will In Charge to have won this prestigious race – the Cal’s Tomato Ketchup Gold Cup. The win was expected; I stepped him up in exercise and he responded to it.
“We will now go to the Superstakes next month and then definitely the Diamond Mile in December. I believe he has excellent chances in both races but we will have to take it one race at a time,” Pearson said.
He then revealed his strategy which led to Gold Cup victory.
“The plan for the race was basically, if She’s A Maneater’s jockey Omar Walker decided to pull out then we would go for home early. She ( She’s A Maneater) did that (pulled out off the pace) and so we decided to go for home from the half mile, and it worked out for us,” Pearson said.
