Farquharson taking aim at Class One 800m record
Kimar Farquharson produced a scintillating early season performance in the Class One Boys’ 800m at the JC/Pure Water/R Danny Williams Athletics Development Meet last Saturday on the newly laid synthetic track to set tongues wagging.
In what was one of the performances of the meet, the Calabar High star stormed to 1:51.03 minutes after running virtually all by himself from gun to tape. With an obvious game plan of taking out the competition early, Farquharson separated himself from the field after the first 200m and from there on it was all about the time that he would run.
The 17-year-old clocked 51 seconds for the first lap and maintained the pace for the second 400m despite not having anyone to push him. He did have the support of the usual Calabar fans who cheered him on loudly as he came down the home stretch for the second and final time.
Speaking with reporters after sending the early season signal, the defending champion from “Champs” said he wasn’t surprised at the impressive time he ran.
“I feel great because everything I do, I do it in training before. Before I come to this meet my coach said to give it my best because he knows I can do it already, so I just take it for a training session. “
Farquharson says that because it was his first meet of the season he wanted to do something special.
“Every year my body gets stronger and stronger so I tell myself every year that I am going to come out with a better ‘PB’ [personal best]. It is my first track meet, so I wanted to run a great time.”
The national representative says he is taking full aim at the Class One record this season and that with the guidance of his coach Michael Clarke, he expects to get it.
“I am aiming for the Class One 800m record. I think I can get there because I have a wonderful coach, so he can put me there.”
He also revealed that there was no clearly defined race plan as the main aim was to get in his first race for the season.
“I didn’t really put the race together as I wanted to…I came out here just to run, it never really mattered the time, just to run,” he explained.
Farquharson currently has a personal best of 1:49.66 minutes for the 800m.
