Intercol Rugby League opens with upsets
There were two upsets in the opening round of the Intercol Rugby League Championship on Saturday.
Defending champions G C Foster College Lions went down to a shock 18-22 defeat at the hands of The Mico University College Crocs at home.
Meanwhile, Caribbean Maritime University Spartans (CMU), who finished bottom of the table last year, held off number two ranked Excelsior Community College Eagles (Exed Eagles) 16-10 at Excelsior High School. The University of the West Indies Pelicans (UWI) recorded the biggest win of the round with a convincing 30-14 triumph over University of Technology Knights (UTech Knights).
Mico were led by half-back Dominic Brown who scored 10 points from five kicks. He got support from fullback Kwame Blake, loose forward Romario Pennant and powerful second row Roman Parkes, each scoring a try. For G C Foster, centre Quincy Jones top scored with eight points from two tries, Devon Thomas had six points from a try and a goal, winger Adrian Thomas completed their points with a late try in the second half.
CMU were led by winger Adrian Brown with six points from a try and a goal. He got support from centres Dondre Haughton and Giovannie Salve with a try each. Only Sheldon Kelly managed a try for Exed, the rest of their points came from Donhue Sinclair (two goals) and To-Wayne Dawkins (one goal).
UWI’s dominant performance was built on 14 points scored by national half-back Adrain Hall. The diminutive playmaker scored two tries and kicked three goals. Delano Jarrett supported with eight points from two tries and Regis Reyes and Michael Person each scored a try to complete UWI’s points. For UTech, Kile Nembhard top-scored with six points from three goals and Jenson Morris and Bruce Higgins each scored a try.
Round Two takes place on Thursday with CMU Spartans taking on UTech Knights at Breezy Castle. Then on Saturday Exed Eagles face G C Foster Lions at Excelsior Community College and UWi Pelicans host Mico Crocs at UWI. All games begin at 3:30 pm.
