Trump now chooses Government in Venezuela?
Dear Editor,
US President Donald Trump has declared Venezuela’s Leader of the Opposition Juan Guaido as the president.
This is tantamount to President Vladimir Putin declaring Nancy Pelosi as president of the US.
Guaido is as far from the presidency as anyone could. He has never run for national office and his only claim to fame is that he is the ‘puppet’ of a foreign power.
US Vice-President Mike Pence has called de jure President Maduro a dictator. But how can a president be a dictator if the Opposition party controls the legislature as well as the majority of the newspapers in the country?
In support of his declaration, President Trump referred to Maduro as an illegitimate president.
President Maduro won the majority of the votes in two elections, described by independent observers as free and fair.
In contrast, President Trump got elected with a minority of the popular vote in the US election, which was allegedly tainted with Russian interference.
Between Trump and Maduro, which one appears to be the more legitimate?
