Lee, Wynter on top at Tournament of Kings Badminton Championships
MATTHEW Lee and Katherine Wynter captured the men’s and women’s singles titles as the curtains came down at the two-day Tournament of Kings Badminton Championships at the National Arenaon Sunday.
Lee came from a set down in the Open Division men’s singles final to get the better of Dennis Coke 14-21, 21-13, 21-14.
Lee defeated Allantae Daley, Kemar Valentine and Panamanian Kyle Seixas on his way to the final.
Meanwhile, Wynter easily captured the Open Division women’s singles title by defeating Tahlia Richardson 21-16, 21-10. Wynter had brushed aside Stacey-Ann Blake 21-1, 21-4 before facing Richardson in the final.
Tahlellah Townsend battled through in three sets before beating Alexander Beckford 21-19, 15-21, 21-12 to win the women’s B Division singles final.
Meanwhile, Jamaica-born Panamanian Kyle Seixas made easy work of 21-year-old Christopher Beecher to capture the B Division men’s singles title 21-14, 21-10.
Seixas is training in Jamaica in preparation for this year’s Jamaica International Badminton Championships to be held from March 7-10, and also with a view to a possible 2020 Olympics bid.
He had beaten Adam Taylor, Marc-Anthony Salmon, Shawn Clarke and Maurice McLaren before going up against Beecher in the final.
Bradley Evans won the C Division men’s singles final with a 21-16, 21-17 win over Carey Hart. He had defeated Zachary Limsang, Keron Roache and top seed Maurice McLaren in a gruelling three-setter before making easy work of Hart in the final.
Townsend chalked up her second title triumph by defeating Stephanie Brown from Mandeville in three hard-fought sets 21-18, 17-21, 21-16 to capture the C Division women’s singles title. Townsend had got past Aaliyah Walker and Karee Dawson on her way to the title.
Tevin Ennis defeated Chrisano Hanna 21-13, 21-0 (retired) to win the D Division men’s singles title. Ennis had got by Jacky Lee, Mathew Gibb and Orville Mattis to reach the final.
Alyanna Coulbourne fought off the challenge of Channelle Russel to come from a set down to win 16-21, 21-13, 21-13 to capture the women’s D Division singles title. Earlier, Coulbourne had dispatched Shantie Hendricks, Gabrielle Simpson and Kerry-Ann Kirby enroute to the final. Coulbourne also made it to the semi-finals of the C Division singles.
