Western-based schools show good form at STETHS/Wata Invitational
PETERSFIELD, Westmoreland — Western-based athletes showed good form over the weekend as they were responsible for seven of the 24 records set at the 37th STETHS/Wata Invitational held at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex.
Petersfield High’s national junior representative and ISSA Champs double-gold medallist last year, Shaquena Foote, gave warning that she could be expanding her repertoire as she set a new mark in the Girls’ 400m hurdles Open, while establishing an impressive time in the Class 1 800m that was contested for the first time.
Additionally, western-based athletes won another 11 events as they prepared for the championships season that gets underway in another three weeks.
Foote, who started competing in the 400m hurdles this season, clocked 59.58 seconds to win the event that saw western athletes break records in all three intermediate hurdles races.
Shiann Salmon had set the previous record of 1:01.26 seconds last year, and Foote returned later to win the 800m in an impressive 2:10.43 seconds.
Brithon Senior, who represented the island in the sprint hurdles, ran a new record 54.71 seconds to win the Class 1 boys’ event, beating the 54.83 seconds set three years ago by STETHS Jauavney James.
Petersfield High’s Shamar Pearce won the Class 2 event in a new record 56.40 seconds, beating the 58.10 seconds set by Senior two years ago.
Cornwall College’s Lansford Cunningham broke the Class 2 long jump record with a personal best 6.63m, erasing the 6.52m set by Green Island High’s David Tomlinson in 2017.
Green Pond High’s Rowry Hall leapt 5.77m to win the Class 3 long jump in a new meet record, better than the 5.62m that was done in 2016 by Jermaine Ewars of Glenmuir High.
Anthony Thorpe of Herbert Morrison Technical cleared 1.95m to win the Class 2 high jump, just higher than the 1.93m done by his teammate Antonio Hanson last year.
The Petersfield High boys’ 4x400m relay team of Xavier Morgan, Romario Taylor, Kevon Stone and Antonio Watson ended the meet on a high note breaking the meet record with a sparkling 3:16.87 seconds run to erase the 3:17.41 seconds set by a team from STETHS a year ago.
Cornwall College maintained their strangle hold on the triple jumps at the meet, winning both in Class 1 and Class 2 with Omari McKenzie and Kaheem Allen respectively — the sixth straight year they have won at least one of the triple jump events.
Herbert Morrison’s Deandre Daley set a big mark when he won the Boys’ Class 3 100m in 11.45 seconds, while Green Island’s Kalani Cook won the Class 2 race in 11.26 seconds.
Rusea’s High’s Adiana Brown jumped 5.36m to win the girls’ Class 2 long jump, beating her teammate Nia Robinson 5.32m, while Herbert Morrison’s Daniella Anglin won the Class 2 high jump, defeating Robinson on the countback as both cleared 1.70m.
Petersfield High’s Courtney Lawrence won a tough Class 1 shot put with 17.96m, while Rusea’s High’s Shamella Donaldson took the Class 1 girls’ discus with 47.71m.
Both javelin events were won by athletes from Petersfield High, as Brandon McLaren won the boys’ with 54.34m and Judeen Aird, the girls with 34.83m.
