Titans bask in Super League success
THE Central Titans management and coaching staff was a happy bunch after the team lifted its second-straight Jamaica Cricket Association two-day Super League title on Sunday.
The Titans claimed first-innings honours in the drawn final-round league encounter against hosts Combined Universities and Colleges (CUC) at Mona Bowl to finish with 35 points from 10 matches.
Southern Seals were second with 30 points, followed by Northern Panthers (24), Eastern Eagles (23), CUC (16) and Western Warriors (12).
The Titans were winners of the two-day and 50-over competitions last season.
Coach Robert Turner noted his team’s sense of focus after surging into the lead toward the tail end of the competition.
“I must say congratulations to the Central Titans management staff and especially the players. After the seventh round in which we found ourselves in the lead, we really played exceptionally to maintain it,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“I’m feeling good. It’s my first title as a coach and it’s a the top one in the country — the Super League,” Turner added.
Milton Thomas, manager of the Titans, said team chemistry, hard work, and self-belief were important ingredients.
“It was a very good season. We prepared, we worked hard and we bonded together nicely, and this was just a manifestation of the work done. I’m truly elated; very happy.
“We have three national players in [Steven] Taylor, Kenroy Williams and [Assad] Fudadin, so that’s a plus, however, the bulk of the team basically comes from St Catherine and they are familiar with winning,” said Thomas who was the coach last year.
Player/coach Tamar Lambert said he believes the Titans were the strongest in the competition, but insisted they still needed to prove it out in the middle.
“I think on paper we have the best squad, but at the end of the day cricket is played on the field and we demonstrated our quality to come out on top.
“I think these guys have worked hard in terms of their mental strength. I think this year was an even better year batting-wise,” Lambert, the former Jamaica captain, told the Observer.
