Tough call for Alexander Hamilton Trophy
A competitive field of six will go to post for the Alexander Hamilton Trophy, an Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward, which takes centre stage on a good-looking 10-race programme at Caymanas Park today.
The field for this feature event being contested in honour of the civic-minded Alexander Hamilton includes a few seasoned distance horses that will relish the one mile (1,600m) trip in hunt of the major slice of the $1.15-million purse.
Slated as race number five on the card, the mouth-watering contest between these horses rated just below Grade One, is scheduled for approximately 2:35 pm, with first post at 12:15 pm.
The fleet-footed Another Vigorous, recent winner Superluminal and the nicely freshened Hover Craft are the main contenders for the event, further heightened by the inclusion of Secret Traveller and Saratoga Sight, who are both expected to figure prominently throughout.
Armageddon, the stablemate of Another Vigorous, is the lone runner in the field who is not expected to figure much.
The Rowan Mathie-conditioned Another Vigorous will be venturing into unknown territory, having never gone a mile before, but the four-year-old bay gelding is not expected to be too inconvenienced by the journey, especially in the hands of the wily Dane Nelson.
Another Vigorous has shown in the not too distant past that he can manage a distance of ground, with his last two victories on December 1 and 29, both coming over seven furlongs (1,400 metres).
The December 29 performance, more so, spoke volumes, as the four-year-old bay gelding came from well off the pace and ran through the pack for a comfortable one-length win at the end.
In a bid for the hat-trick of wins, Another Vigorous again came from off the pace, closing fast for third behind Another Bullet and Nuclear Flight when opening his season over five and a half furlongs (1,100 metres) earlier this year.
Those performances are clear indicators that Another Vigorous, who has since been on the move at exercise, will cause some problems here and could set off in front and prove hard to get back to, despite carrying 56.0 kgs.
Superluminal is a proven campaigner, who recently regained winning form when getting by an Overnight Allowance field over eight and a half furlongs (1,700 metres) in December.
In that event, Superluminal was carrying topwieght of 57.0 kgs and now back up in class, will be going with a mere 52.0 kgs for this assignment, some eight pounds lighter than Another Vigorous.
Conditioned by Ian Parsard, the seven-year-old Superluminal has also been working well for this, his seasonal bow and could bring stamina into play to get by Another Vigorous in the closing stages. This is on the basis that jockey Omar Walker stays close to or challenges Another Vigorous on the headline.
Meanwhile, Wayne DaCosta’s Hover Craft tried “his hand” at and as expected was outclassed by the likes of Bigdaddykool and She’s A Maneater in Grade One company for the Miracle Man Trophy on Boxing Day.
But this oldstager at nine years old still has some fight left in the tank as he too has been working well for this, his seasonal bow, and now back among his peers, could come hunting in the closing stages, if not left too far behind, too early in the race.
Hover Craft is slated to go with 57.0 kgs, but will benefit from the 3.0 kgs claim of apprentice Tevin Foster.
