Superluminal snares feature, Chris Mamdeen the star with three-timer
An enterprising ride from former champion jockey Omar Walker propelled Superluminal to a nail-biting win, as they snared the feature event for the Alexander Hamilton Trophy over a mile (1,600 metres) on the 10-race card at Caymanas Park yesterday.
The Ian Parsard-trained Superluminal finished tops in the three-year-old and upwards Open Allowance event by a short head over the fast-finishing Saratoga Sight (Aaron Chatrie).
Superluminal, a seven-year-old bay horse ( Natural Selection — Thousand Hills) was registering a second-consecutive victory on and first for the season.
The six-horse event was always expected to be a match-race between Superluminal and Another Vigorous, with Dane Nelson astride, and the two hooked up on the lead for most of the way with Secret Traveller (Trevor Simpson) on their tails.
They separated themselves from the pack, leaving the half-mile with Another Vigorous, who was somewhat out of his depth going a mile, being strongly urged by Nelson as Walker gradually asked Superluminal to go.
Superluminal then brought stamina into play in the stretch run but had to stave off Saratoga Sight, who took aim at the furlong pole and was not allowed to pass on the inside rails by a busy Walker.
Owned by PJK team, Superluminal, the 8-5 shot, came home in a tidy 1:38.3, behind splits of 24.2, 47.0 and 1:10.4. Hover Craft (Tevin Foster up) was third.
Apprentice Christopher Mamdeen topped all riders with a three-timer, which saw him assuming pole position in the standings with a tally of 11 winners, one ahead of Trevor Simpson who was winless on the day.
Mamdeen won aboard Jamaica Citizen for trainer Joseph Thomas in the first, as well as Big Black Nation and Storm Princess in the sixth and eight events, respectively, both for trainer Steven Todd, who topped his colleagues.
