Cambridge, Irwin score big wins in St James Sandals Major League
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Promoted Cambridge FC and Irwin FC scored big wins to get their first victory in the St James Football Association Sandals Resorts International Major League this week.
On Tuesday, Cambridge FC, one of three teams promoted last season, hammered last season’s Division One champions Bogue FC 5-0 at the UDC field to take over the lead in Zone Two, a day after Irwin outscored Lilliput Rovers 3-2, snapping their two-game winning start to the season.
Cambridge FC lead Zone Two on goal difference over Heights FC and MoBay City FC, all on five points from three games with Marl Road next on three points, all from draws.
Despite the loss, Lilliput Rovers are still in front in Zone One, on goal difference over Catherine Hall FC and Melbourne Mind Game, all on six points, two more than Irwin FC.
On Monday, Obrien Bent scored a double for Cambridge FC late in the game after the contest was already decided.
Anthony Brown gave them the lead in the 13th minute with his second goal of the season, while Larone East doubled the advantage in the 37th minute as they led 2-0 at half-time.
Damion James made it 3-0 in the 51st minute before Bent added two more, in the 71st and the 79th minutes.
On Monday, Christopher Reid’s second goal, the only one of the five scored in the second half, made the difference between Irwin FC and Lilliput Rovers.
Jermie Bucknor’s brace had brought Lilliput Rovers back twice in an explosive first half.
Reid gave Irwin the lead in the fifth minute but Bucknor responded in the 10th minute. Tevin Bennett restored Irwin FC’s lead in the 29th minute and once again Bucknor brought his team back level in the 38th minute.
Reid, however, won the game for his team when he scored in the 65th minute.
