Protoje awaits his time
ROOTS-REVIVAL singjay Protoje is among the contenders for the Grammy’s Best Reggae Album. The event is scheduled for Sunday at the Staples Center in California.
Protoje received his first nod for A Matter of Time, his fourth studio project. Released May 18, 2018 by InDigg Nation Collective/Overstand Entertainment and Easy Star Records, the set boasts 10 tracks including the title track, Blood Money, Mind of a King and Like This.
“I really didn’t expect it. I was surprised by the nomination, but I gratefully accept it,” the singer told the Jamaica Observer in December.
The album, produced by Phillip “Winta” James, also features collaborations with fellow roots-revival artiste Chronixx.
Interestingly, Chronixx is the first member of the current roots-revival movement to get a Grammy nomination. He received it for Chronology, but eventually lost out to Damian Marley’s Stony Hill.
The current roots-revival resurgence is led by Chronixx and includes Kabaka Pyramid, Jesse Royal, Jah9, and Iba Mahr. A similar movement was started in the 1990s, led by Garnet Silk and Yasus Afari. Tony Rebel belongs to the latter group.
Protoje is confident of his chances to lift the ‘Golden Gramophone’.
“A nomination is just like a win to me… A win though would be a win for the culture and the generation,” said Protoje.
The other nominees for the Best Reggae Album category are Black Uhuru ( As The World Turns,) Etana ( Reggae Forever), Ziggy Marley ( Rebellion Rises) and Sting and Shaggy ( 44/876).
