Gatorade 5v5 Soccer Tournament launched
TEAMS from across Latin America, North America, Asia and Europe are preparing to compete in the exciting and growing Gatorade 5v5 Soccer Tournament.
Now in its fourth year, the 2019 competition kicks off with local elimination rounds, which will ultimately send the national champion teams to Madrid, Spain, where the semi-finals and finals will be held in May.
The Gatorade 5v5 Soccer Tournament began in Latin America in 2015. Organised by Gatorade for players between 14 and 16 years old, the tournament fosters young talent to help fuel the next generation of soccer players and challenges these talented athletes to perform at their best while making their opponents sweat.
Participating countries organise their best 14- to 16-year-old players into male and female 5v5 teams. Local rounds are now kicking off to determine the men’s and women’s teams who will make the trip to Madrid and compete for a chance to attend the 2019 UEFA Champions League Final on June 1.
Teams have a chance to register for the tournament beginning yesterday, following the official press launch. Young footballers interested in being part of the tournament must provide proof of age using their birth certificates along with a JP-certified passport photo. Registration closes March 1.
Last year, nearly 120 young people from Europe, North America and Latin America participated in the exciting final rounds in Barcelona, where Panama were crowned the men’s champion and Brazil won the naugural women’s tournament.
“Gatorade has always had a strong association with sports in Jamaica and we are pleased to host the 5v5 Soccer Tournament now in its fourth year for the first time. We understand the value of sports in the lives of young footballers and we are excited to see what they will bring to the tournament. With the support of the Ministry of Sports, Jamaica Football Federation and ISSA we know that this tournament will be a resounding success for everyone involved,” said Cornelia Nathan, Gatorade marketing manager
