LUCEA, Hanover — Rusea’s High will start their quest for a third-straight County of Cornwall Athletics Association/Digicel Girls’ Western Championships title today when they host the eliminations at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea, set to start at 9:00 am.

Fifteen finals, all the throw and jump events except the triple jump Open, are down for decision today. over 30 schools are set to participate in the event which is part of the Digicel Grand Prix Series and also a qualifier for the ISSA Boys’ and Girls’ Championships.

Meanwhile, it will be a busy day for the girls as the first round and semi-finals of the sprint hurdles, 100m and 200m will be contested.

The first round of the 400m will also be run with the eight fastest times in each class qualifying for the final to be held at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex on Saturday.

There will also be the first rounds of the 800m, 1500m, as well as the relays.

Meanwhile, Petersfield High are the leaders in the boys’ section after Tuesday’s eliminations held at Herbert Morrison Technical that was affected by a late start, rain and bad light at the end.

A number of events that were scheduled for Tuesday will be done today or carried over to Saturday.

Also, a number of relay semi-finals that could not be held on Tuesday will be run today, while the top three jumpers in the Class Three high jump as well as classes two and four will be decided at St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS).

Petersfield High, who as expected dominated the throwing events, lead with 99.50 points after 11 finals, just ahead of defending champions STETHS with Cornwall College in third place on 74 points.

Petersfield throwers won two of the three discus and shot put titles, while STETHS won two of three long jump titles, classes three and four.

Personal best jumps from Green Island High’s David Tomlinson in Class One and Cornwall College’s Lansford Cunningham in Class Two highlighted the long jumps.

Tomlinson produced 7.10m on his sixth attempt to win the Class One title in a dramatic battle where the lead changed hands at least three times in the final.

Rusea’s High’s Brandon McLaren jumped 7.00m, his lifetime best to snatch the silver from Manning’s School’s Malik Isaacs with 6.90m, while STETHS’s defending champion and record holder Michael Buchanan, who was just returning to competition after an injury, was fourth after leading at the end of the first round.

Cunningham added 10 centimetres to his personal best done at STETHS in late January to secure the Class Two title which he led from the start, and ended with 6.73m to beat STETHS’s Alike Cranston with 6.44m.

Herbert Morrison’s Antonio Hanson won the Class One high jump with a clearance of 1.95m, beating Cornwall College’s Daniel Meggo with 1.90m and Munro College’s Yushann Malcolm, also with 1.90m.

Petersfield High’s Courtney Lawrence won the Class One shot put with a throw of 17.47m ahead of his teammate Christopher Brown with 15.48m and Cornwall College’s Mikhail Dias third with 14.54m.

Daniel Cope of Petersfield won the Class One discus title with 47.44m as Brown had to settle for another silver medal with 47.03m and Rusea’s High’s Timar Clarke took third with 44.52m.
