Nia’s got it

…As girls set 3 records at Western Champs eliminations

LUCEA, Hanover — Three records were broken on yesterday’s Girls’ elimination for the County of Cornwall Athletics Association (COCAA) Western Championships held at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea.

Two of the records came in the high jump where Mt Alvernia High’s Rochell Clayton copped the Class One mark while Rusea’s High’s Nia Robinson broke the Class Two mark, and her teammate Shamella Donaldson broke the record in the Class One discus throw.

Meanwhile, two-time defending champions Rusea’s High lead the points table after just nine finals that were completed yesterday, tallying 91 points, followed by St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) on 68, Petersfield High on 49, Manning’s School with 47 and Mt Alvernia High on 36 filling out the top five.

The long jump finals were scheduled to be completed yesterday but the meet organisers took the decision to move them to Saturday’s combined finals at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz.

Petersfield High lead the boys’ table after 11 finals completed on Tuesday at Herbert Morrison Technical in Montego Bay with 99.50 points, followed by STETHS on 91, Cornwall College on 74, Rusea’s High on 45.50 and Herbert Morrison Technical with 19.

Yesterday, Clayton cleared a personal best 1.72m to win the Class One high jump, beating the 1.70m set in 2014 by Herbert Morrison Technical’s Sashane Hanson.

Irwin High’s Sasha-lee Pitter was second and STETHS’s Moya Crearer third, both with 1.60m.

Robinson, who tied for first last year with two other athletes, broke a nine-year-old record when she cleared her lifetime best 1.76m in the Class Two high jump, beating the 1.75m set in 2010 by STETHS’s Peta-Gay Reid.

STETHS’s Alliyah McNeil was second with 1.65m and Gabrielle Gordon of Newell High took third place with 1.55m.

Donaldson improved the Class One discuss throw mark to 48.85m, beating the 46.20m set last year by Petersfield High’s Shyledeen Smith.

Aliesha Shaw, also of Rusea’s High, took the silver medal with 41.84m, while Petersfield High’s Deon Burley was third with 34.65m.

Aliesha Shaw won the Class One shot put with 12.83m on her final throw, beating her twin sister Kelliesha and avenging her loss in the Class Two final last year.

Kelliesha threw 12.48m for the silver medal while Petersfield High’s Judeen Aird was third with 12.05m.

Rusea’s High athletes Cheyanne Fearon (38.21m) and Shantall Donaldson (30.52m) were first and second in the Class Two discus throw with Petersfield High’s Samoy Malcolm taking third with 29.51m.

STETHS’s Sherene Williams won the Class Three shot put with 14.17m ahead of Fearon with 12.65m and STETHS’s Altamari Holness with 12.23m.

Mt Alvernia High’s Paula Marie Brown won the Class Three high jump, clearing 1.60m, ahead of Montego Bay High’s Kythony Baghaloo with 1.55m and Manning’s School’s Tawani Murray with 1.50m.

STETHS’s Chennai Jarrett and Mt Alvernia High’s Jayla-she Kitchen tied for first in the Class Four high jump, both clearing 1.45m, the same height cleared by Manning’s School’s Quaycian Kitchen, who was third.
