Many pro-choice advocates rest their arguments for abortion on premises that are refutable. They argue it is a woman’s right to do as they please with their bodies and, hence, termination of an unwanted pregnancy should be permissible. This, some argue, should be independent of the stage of the pregnancy. Completely ignored in this decision is the question of what exactly is the “thing” being terminated?

Is the thing being touted for termination endowed with inherent value?

Seeing that all living species only produce offspring of their own kind, it is reasonable to conclude that even in the earliest embryonic stages of development, it is a human being that is being formed and, hence, should not be terminated at a whim and under the “right” of being one’s body.

As philosopher Greg Koukl opines, if the thing being formed is a human being, no justification is acceptable for its termination.

As a nation, we should ensure that the unborn is protected and it shares the same sanctity of life in equal degree with those already amongst us.
