The big clash, the fiercest derby – Manchester United vs Liverpool
SPANISH powerhouses Barcelona and Sevilla are expected to engage in a monumental clash, after which Manchester United and Liverpool do battle in the biggest derby in English football. Later, under fire Maurizio Sarri and his Chelsea side face an uphill battle against Manchester City for the first piece of English silverware this season.
Sevilla, in fourth spot, welcome league leaders Barcelona in a vital game as both teams have experienced a drop in form lately.
Sevilla are out of form heading into this match, having won just one out of their last five games in all competitions. They were top of the table in November, but a terrible run with just one win in eight games has seen them dropped to fourth. On the other hand, Barcelona have struggled recently, drawing away to Lyon in Champions League action on Tuesday. Prior to that, they struggled to a 1-0 win over lowly Valladolid in league action. Barcelona have not been at their best on the road recently, while Sevilla have lost just twice at home, shutting all the big guns that have visited the Ramon Sanchez Stadium. Head-to-head Barcelona have won two of their last three fixtures including a big 6-1 thumping on January 30 this year.
The betting tip! Barcelona win
There will be fireworks when Manchester United and Liverpool meet at Old Trafford on Sunday. Still regarded as the biggest match in English football, this derby could be crucial to this season title winner.
United have been revitalised since losing 3-1 to Liverpool in the reverse fixture — a result which spelled the end of Jose Mourinho’s reign and ushered in the interim spell of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Since then, the Red Devils have recorded eight wins from nine league games and, as a result, they now sit in the top 4 of the Premier League’s standing.
Liverpool, on the other hand, got back on track after a dip in form with an accomplished display in putting away Bournemouth 3-0 in their last league game before drawing 0-0 in Champions League action against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.
This match will be pivotal in deciding the title, as avoiding defeat will send Liverpool back to the top of the standing, while defeat will give Manchester City the edge and one would expect, if that did happen, for City to go on and win the title. When Liverpool ran out 3-1 winners at Anfield in December, it was their first win over United from nine attempts in the Premier League. Few games in world football quite get the juices flowing as this contest, as over the years there have been thrills, spills, tantrums and fallouts all in the most epic of Premier League duels. With four draws in their last six meetings, the “Reds” of Liverpool would be the happier team to leave the theatre of dreams with another draw on Sunday.
The betting tip? Draw
In the final game on Sunday, the in-form Manchester City are expected to retain the Carabao Cup when they face a struggling and disjointed Chelsea team in the final. The “Citizens” are trying to win this trophy for the fourth time in six years.
Chelsea tried to go toe-to-toe with City in a high-tempo clash at the Etihad but paid the price for pressing too much and were humiliated with a 6-0 thrashing. A result that has put pressure on Coach Maurizio Sarri. He was already under pressure following a 4-0 drubbing by Bournemouth and a comprehensive 2-0 loss at Arsenal during January.
Monday’s FA Cup’s defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge only fuelled speculation that the Italian’s time in London could be cut short.
City, on the other hand, defeated Newport 4-1 in FA Cup action last weekend and have moved ahead of Liverpool in the title race. They will be eyeing an historic quadruple this term. This trophy would be lowest on Coach Pep Guardiola’s list of priorities, but his hunger for silverware is insatiable and he made it clear that he is taking this match extremely serious. They say revenge is a dish best served cold, even though no doubt Chelsea’s 6-0 thrashing to City last week is still “pretty” hot. There are few better chances of gaining the ultimate revenge than by defeating the team that embarrassed you and taking the cup away from them.
