Following Money Magnet’s win in the Eileen Cliggott Memorial Trophy feature in a near equalling stakes record time at Caymanas Park on Saturday, Edison Chai, part breeder and owner of the talented chestnut mare, proclaimed that his charge has the right pedigree to be a top-class sprinter.

Despite having to be checked leaving the five-furlong (1,000m) marker, Money Magnet produced a devastating run to power by 1 1/2 lengths ahead of stable companion Peking Cruz in a time of 1:17.4 for the 6 ½ furlong event.

It was the second consecutive trophy win for Money Magnet from as many starts, having won the Reggae Trophy over five furlongs (1,000m) straight on January 19.

Chai said that now his filly can be considered, in terms of performances, right up there in the class of that of She’s A Maneater.

“It was a very good performance by Money Magnet to defeat rivals in such a manner.

“I feel good and I think Money Magnet has many more races to win. Remember the only horse that was better than her in terms of sprinting was She’s A Maneater.

“I mean, Money Magnet won’t be a She’s A Maneater, but Money Magnet is right up there. I think Money Magnet is a wonderful horse,” Chai offered.

Ridden by Simon Husbands, Money Magnet was well out of the starting gates, settling in second behind Exhilarate (Javaniel Patterson) with Peking Cruz (Christopher Mamdeen) just behind.

Money Magnet, on the inside rails, began to gain on Exhilarate at the five- furlong pole but was cramped for room and Husbands had to check with Peking Cruz seizing the opportunity and went in chase of Exhilarate before taking over the lead at the three-eighths marker.

Peking Cruz turned for home looking strong on the lead although drifting out a bit, Husbands then urged Money Magnet, who had recovered well, on the inside rails and the far-striding mare powered home convincingly in the end. Houdini’s Magic (Reyan Lewis) was third.
