When did you start your career as a trainer?

Well my mother use to work in the stands at Caymanas Park for a while and my father stamped tickets and was also a tractor driver. So that was my introduction to racing. I have been in racing since 1992 when I started as an apprentice and then a groom. Then, I became a trainer. Being a trainer, it is not bad for if I get the horses then I will win with them. If you don’t good horses you cannot win races. Kenneth Mattis was my apprentice master and after serving my time and attending the Jockey Training School, I graduated to get my trainer’s licence in 2001 and I have no regrets being a trainer of race horses. It is something that I enjoy doing.

Which horse was your first winner?

My first winner was Quick Medic. This was in 2001, the same year I graduated. I got my trainer’s licence in September 2001 and posted my first winner in November. Quick Medic was a two-year-old and Trevor Simpson was the rider. The race was the Abbe Grannum Memorial Cup and was run over seven furlongs (1,400 metres). I am proud of myself for that achievement and is something I remember well as winning your first race is always a special occasion. All, I want is to get the horses. When I have horses, I get them to win. I will work with them and get them to run. I have confidence in myself.

Which horse was your longest odds winner?

That I cannot recall as my horses always sell favourite. This is because my horses always look good when they enter the Parade Ring. My apprentice master always instructed me to “condition your horses well.” He would say to me “never get into the habit of running a horse that does not look well.” So, my horses always look good and are always well prepared and people always buy them down.

Which is the best horse you’ve trained?

I would say that the best horse that I have trained so far in my career is Quick Medic.

Which is the best horse you’ve seen run at Caymanas Park?

The best horse, I have seen run at Caymanas Park is She’s A Maneater. Legal Light was a very good horse, I know Jungle Beat and Timber King. I knew all those horses plus others who have made a significant mark in their running careers but She’s A Maneater is the best for me. A quality that she possesses that was missing from the armoury of other great runners at the track is her versatility. She is an outstanding competitor in events from five furlongs to 12 furlongs. You cannot kill her. She is very, very good. The great Legal Light could only go 10 furlongs where he was most effective and that is why I selected She’s A Maneater ahead of Legal Light who was a tremendous competitor over a distance of ground with a heavy impost but still lacked the overall versatility of this great filly. She’s A Maneater is my firm choice.

Who influenced you most in your career?

My mother without any hesitation. She loved the sport and thought it was a good field to keep me active and I have no regrets. All I need at present is to get horses and I will get them to win. It is not an easy task but I learnt about horse care and conditioning from the ground up and will get the job of winning races done. Again, all I need are the horses and I will do the rest.
