Brandy moves on to Overnight Allowance
Four-year-old chestnut filly Brandy moved up to the Overnight Allowance level after a runaway victory in an Optional Claiming ($600,000 – $500,000) event over seven furlongs (1,400m) on Saturday last, February 23, 2019.
The He’stherealthing’s offspring romped home by 10 ½ lengths in a time of 1:27.0 to earn her fourth career win from 18 starts with lifetime earnings of over $4.2 million.
Jockey Anthony Thomas broke Brandy fairly well but the far-striding filly was tucked tightly in a three-way rumble for supremacy with Storm (Dane Nelson), and Ballon d’Or (Tevin Foster) who he beat by head.
As the six runners sorted themselves out, Brandy surged to the lead on the outside of runners and quickly began to open up on the field after the five-furlong (1,000m) point in the race.
Cruising coming into the lane for the stretch drive Brandy had no real challenger, and so the Wayne DaCosta trainee wasted no time and powered home on a common canter.
Flying Machine (Trevor Simpson) came from far behind to get second place ahead of Ballon d’Or in third and Storm in fourth. Splits for the race were 23.3, 46.3 and 1:12.1.
“Good performance, but she had it her own way from the word go. Brandy was able to get an easy lead and, basically, she dominated right throughout the race,” DaCosta told the Supreme Racing Guide.
DaCosta continued: “Well she is now in Overnight, a much tougher class, but let’s see. Brandy, too, has some class and so let’s see how it goes. Not quite sure how far she will go as she had problems as a two-year-old and a three-year-old. She had a chip in her knee and we removed the chip, so let’s hope she moves on from here.”
