Transport Authority refutes claims of looming fare increase
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Transport Authority is dismissing reports of a looming fare increase in the public transportation sector.
The organisation, in a statement yesterday, indicated that it has not yet made a decision on a hike in fares and said it is reviewing the fare proposals received.
In the meantime, the authority is reminding operators of public passenger vehicles (PPV) that they can now renew their road licences as the 2019/20 road licensing period commenced on February 18.
Operators may also complete the compulsory examination of the vehicles now, under the early motor vehicle examination facility, it added.
Under this facility, which began on January 25, licensees are not required to pay the motor vehicle examination fees upfront, as the fees will be collected upon submission of their applications for renewal of their road licences, the authority explained.
It cautioned that road licences for PPV owners who fail to complete the renewal process by Friday, March 29 will become invalid as of April 1, 2019.
