Axle Rod back in the winners’ enclosure
Axle Rod ( Nuclear Wayne – No Money No Money) romped home easily in a Restricted Stakes event over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m) on Wednesday to break a his barren spell. The Richard Azan trainee got home by 2 ½ lengths in a time of 1:07.2 after chasing splits of 23.1 and 47.0.
Ridden by apprentice Christopher Mamdeen, Axle Rod wasn’t the best to leave the starting gates in the small field of five runners, but he was close enough to the leaders as Reigning King (Reyan Lewis) and American Invader (Abigail Able) set the early trail with Harry’s Train (Omar Walker) chasing from third.
Axle Rod took his time to get into full gear and began to gain on the leaders at the 2 ½ furlong marker as Harry’s Train surged between horses to pick up the lead.
Turning for home with three horses – American Invader on the outside, Harry’s Train in the middle and Reigning King on the inside rails – fighting for control, Mamdeem produced his mount and Axle Rod responded by powering through horses for the win.
Reigning King was second, Harry’s Train third and American Invader fourth. American Invader actually finished in second place but was disqualified and placed fourth for causing interference to Harry’s Train inside the final furlong.
Lazer Light off the mark
After 25 starts, the Gary Griffiths-bred, owned and trained Lazer Light ( Dayton Flyer – Orphan Song) was able to release the maiden tag after cruising home in a maiden condition race over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m) on Wednesday.
Lazer Light got a good break under Dane Nelson and was held in third position behind M y Son Bates (Phillip Parchment) and Danceallnight (Javaniel Patterson). As the field motored towards the five-furlong (1000m) pole, Lazer Light came through on the inside rails to pick up the lead ahead of My Son Bates.
Cruising coming into the lane, Lazer Light then responded well to Nelson’s handling to score easily by 14 lengths. Lambana (Shane Ellis) was 1 ½ lengths in front of Dancehallnight for second place. The final time was 1:37.3.
Superbolt wins James B Dawes Memorial Trophy feature
As expected, the Lorne Kirlew-trained Superbolt took home the $720,000 James B Dawes Memorial Trophy feature over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m) on Wednesday.
Superbolt, who was installed as the 3-5 favourite in the nine-horse field, won by 6 ½ lengths in a time of 1:21.1.
Superbolt broke in second position but was pushed through to the lead at the 5-furlong (1,000m) over Hologram Shadow with Meet Justin (Orlando Foster) just behind.
The five-year-old bay horse then kicked in the lane and never looked backed as he cruised home ahead of Meet Justin (Orlando Foster) and Hologram Shadow (Reyan Lewis).
The win by Superbolt provided apprentice Christopher Mamdeen with his fourth on the day, and the 31st of his career, and 15th for the year.
