A patient care assistant, who was employed at Kingston Public Hospital, and her son are scheduled to go on trial in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on April 2 in relation to their alleged involvement in the theft of a large quantity of medical supplies from the hospital.

Joy Brown and her 27-year-old son Kemar Samuels were arrested and charged in January with simple larceny and receiving stolen property after police raided her home in Manley Meadows, Kingston, on January 14 and said they found 62 boxes of examination gloves, 1,000 urine bags, six rolls of hand towel, 17 boxes of cotton wool, and nine surgical tapes.

Yesterday when they appeared in court, the trial date was fixed. Samuels was remanded while his mother’s bail was extended.

Samuels, who is represented by Attorney Peter Champagnie, was previously denied bail after the investigator told the court that based on their investigation Samuels is believed to be affiliated with a gang and that he was allegedly heard in a voice note on his phone threatening to kill policemen in the Kingston East Police Division for the fatal shooting of a gang member.

The investigating officer also reported to the court that Samuels was allegedly seen in a photograph posing with a firearm and that there were also messages about “locking weapons”.

However, as it relates to the medical supplies, Samuels said that he bought the items in Coronation Market in downtown Kingston in an informal transaction.
