Papa Albert for Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy
Although there are a number of three-year-olds on the card running for possible Classic participation, it is the Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy feature that will highlight the 10-race programme at Caymanas Park today.
Seven runners are down to take part in the $350,000-$300,000 claiming race over five furlongs (1,000m) straight with the entire field having a chance to cop the $660,000 purse money. Big Black Nation, Pizarro , Executive Charm, Papa Albert, Dr Banner, Kimberly Gold and Sweet Destiny should all play prominent roles to the very end of this race.
The Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy feature is the seventh race on the card and will go to post at 3:50 pm. First race is set to go off at 12:10 pm.
Big Black Nation failed to land a blow on a $250,000-$200,000 claiming tag on last when he finished in seventh position by 13 1/2 lengths going seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m). Although in a tougher spot here, the six-year-old dark bay gelding will relish this quick sprint and could upset calculations here, especially with Dane Nelson in the saddle.
The Anthony Nunes-trained Pizarro has been off the board in his last three starts but loves this distance, and given his fine speed is not to be taken lightly since a trophy is now at stake.
Executive Charm has been running poorly in recent times but some of those races were among better opposition in Overnight Allowance company. The six-year-old chestnut mare was a late scratch on last but she should be fine for this one and with this race holding few terrors, Executive Charm is going to be a danger to all.
The horse that should be hard to beat here is Papa Albert. The chestnut gelding had finished a good third by over three lengths behind JamalJames and Forest Rose in the class above ($450,000-$400,000 claiming). Now stepping down the ladder to contest this trophy race, Papa Albert is going to prove hard to get back to. Omar Walker rides for trainer Ryan Darby.
Another one who runs well over the five-straight course is Dr Banner. Dr Banner was just beaten by Sharp Skirt by half-length over the distance on January 12, 2019 and with Samantha Fletcher chipping off weight here, this chestnut gelding should be bang in contention to the end .
Kimberly Gold showed on last that she is rounding into form after just failing to catch Mr Lyndhurst over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m). Kimberly Gold is also effective over five furlongs straight and with the change in jockey from Everton Miller to champion Anthony Thomas, the chestnut mare is poised to go one better.
Sweet Destiny, a winner on last on the round course, steps up to compete here but acts well over the straight and could find a place here.
Also on the card with great consideration is the ninth race, an Open Allowance event going over the straight as well. My Sister from the stables of Gary Subratie should get the better of rivals here. Twilight Dreams, Dunrobin and Night Light should run well also.
