Three records broken at Puma Gibson McCook Relays
THREE relay records were broken at last Saturdays’ exciting 43rd staging of the Puma Gibson McCook Relays at National Stadium, including both high school sprint medleys.
In addition to a sensational 800m anchor leg run by Calabar High’s Kimar Farquharson timed at 1:47.9 minutes — helping to lower the record to clocking 7:31.71 minutes down from 7:32.76 set two years ago by St Jago High, Enid Bennett High (formerly Bog Walk High) broke the boys’ SMR record, while The Queen’s School lowered the time in the high school girls’ event.
The Enid Bennett High team clocked 3 minutes 25.99 seconds, beating the 3:27.03 set by the Gail Indian Speedstar team last year.
Kingston College were second with 3:27.27 minutes, and Holmwood Technical third with 3:27.79.
The Queen’s School’s 4:00.83 minutes dipped under the 4:01.82 set last year by Hydel High, as Holmwood Technical were also under the old record with 4:00.86 for second place, with St Catherine High third with 4:02.87 minutes.
Kingston College won two of the boys’ 4x200m relays, winning classes two and four as St Jago High powered home in 1:25.39 minutes to win the Class One race ahead of Calabar High’s 1:26.60 minutes. Excelsior High were third in 1:26.76 minutes.
The “Purples” took Class Two in 1:28.12 minutes, beating Wolmer’s Boys’ 1:28.20, and Calabar High were third in 1:28.89, just holding off a gallant Lacovia High team with 1:29.00 minutes.
Jamaica College won the Class Three race in 1:32.70 minutes, beating Kingston College (1:33.18), with Excelsior High third in 1:34.88 minutes.
Kingston College were the champions in Class Four, running 1:36.36 minutes to beat St Jago High (1:40.39) s while Cornwall College took the bronze medal in 1:41.43 minutes, overhauling the Camperdown High team in the last 60 metres.
Holmwood Technical retained the girls’ 4x200m Open, running 1:34.19 minutes to beat Edwin Allen High (1:34.59) and St Jago High (1:35.32).
Kingston College and Hydel High successfully defended their 4x400m titles after setting the fastest times in the first round.
Kingston College ran 3:10.99 to land the boys’ Open race easily ahead of Holmwood Technical (3:12.36) and Calabar High (3:13.65).
Despite not running as fast as they did in the heats, Hydel High won the girls’ race in 3:42.44 minutes, beating Spalding High (3:42.64) and Petersfield High (3:44.29).
Racers TC won the men’s clubs mile relay in a smart 3:05.98 minutes ahead of Sprintec (3:06.27) and UWI-Mona (3:08.20).
Sprintec retained the women’s clubs title with 3:32.74 minutes, beating Swept TC (3:34.45) ,with G C Foster College (3:34.45) in third place.
Andrew Fisher won the men’s Open 100m in a wind-aided 10.21 seconds (2.2m/s) beating UWI-Mona’s Emmanuel Archibald who clocked 10.23 seconds (2.2m/s), with MVP’s Nesta Carter third in 10.26 seconds (2.2m/s).
UTech’s Kemba Nelson won the women’s 100m in a personal best 11.71 seconds (0.9m/s); MVP’s Srabani Nanda was second in 11.77 seconds (0.9m/s); and another UTech runner, Shockori Wallace was third in 12.00 seconds (0.9m/s).
Malik James-King won the men’s 400m Open in 47.49 seconds, beating teammate Devaughn Baker (48.79 seconds) and Racers’ Jermaine Gayle (49.00 seconds).
Sada Williams took the women’s 400m Open in 52.93 seconds, beating teammate Junell Bromfield (53.52 seconds) and Ravens TC’s Alesha Kelly (53.67 seconds).
Chadoye Dawson won the men’s mile in 4 minutes 26.05 seconds, beating Spot Valley High’s Tyrese Reid (4:26.52 minutes) while Amos Beadle of Kingston College was third in 4:28.09 minutes.
Samantha James of Fast & Furious won the women’s mile in 5:16.49 minutes, beating St Jago High’s Brittanni Willis (5:23.95) and Raven TC’s Sancia Smith (5:26.75).
