CMU hosts career fair
OVER 200 final-year students of Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) converged on/at the PetroCaribe Development Building on the campus at Palisadoes Park on Tuesday to do interviews with some 20 corporate companies and firms, hoping to land jobs upon completing their degree programmes this summer, or at the very least, gain some interviewing experience.
Each of them had four scheduled interviews, with companies from the financial/insurance, security, automobile and appliances, energy, and food manufacturing sectors.
As the assistant manager for Placement Services Althea Morrison, explained that some of the companies were actively recruiting, while others were executing mentorship programmes geared towards preparing the students for the world of the work.
She said that compared to last year, the annual exercise had doubled both in terms of particiapting students and potential employers.
“Everyone is eager to get employed,” she said, pointing out that there was a handful of previous graduates among the group seeking opportunities.
She added that prior to the career fair, CMU engages with the corporate world to ensure students benefit from work experience in areas which they study.
The former Caribbean Maritime Institute became Caribbean Maritime University on World Maritime Day, September 28, at an official ceremony held at the National Arena in Kingston.
