Weekly-Round-up: Education muzzle plan… PNP confirms Crawford… 8 killed in Westmoreland
KINGSTON, Jamaica — It was on Tuesday reported that the Ministry of Education has designed a concept paper that proposes a range of regulations that would effectively encroach on the right to freedom of expression among politically active teachers and school board members.
Minister of Education Ruel Reid, in an apparent attempt to prevent what was shaping up to be heavy backlash against the proposal said there is no regulation or guideline relating to teachers, principals and members of school boards who are engaging in political activity.
In other news, the Opposition People’s National Party on Monday confirmed that Senator Damion Crawford will be its candidate to go up against the Jamaica Labour Party’s standard-bearer Ann Marie Vaz, in the upcoming by-election for the Portland Eastern constituency.
On the crime scene, the police on Wednesday imposed a curfew in two sections of Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland after gunmen went on rampages in separate incidents across the parish between Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning killing eight people and injuring one.
Soon after, a total of 24 people were listed as wanted in the parish while another 13 were named as persons of interest.
