What They Say: Borris McIntosh — Racehorse Trainer
When did you start your career as a trainer?
I started my career as a trainer around 2012 or 2013, thereabouts. I don’t remember right now, but it was one of those years. At the time, I had some friends and associates in the business of horse racing and that was how I got involved in the sport. They are the ones, my friends, who really encouraged me to make a profession out of horse racing, as I usually have it [horse racing] as a pastime until I got deeper and deeper into it. At the start, I was an owner of horses and did pretty well and after a short while, I decided to make the bold move of becoming a trainer of thoroughbred race horses. That is the way it went and I have tried and done my best as a trainer.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner was with a horse by the name of Lady Gorakhpur. That day the feeling was so amazing, it was something no one could ever write about. It felt like you had achieved something in life because of the work and the time that goes into getting a horse prepared, fit and ready, to take the track and win. For sure, at the moment when you went by the purse in front, you feel like you did something good, as all your work has paid off. Lady Gorakhpur trained well for the race and she ran well to win and I was proud of her.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
I don’t remember my longest odds winner. Maybe my longest odds was around 10-1 or 15-1 but the horse’s name, I don’t remember at this time. However, I don’t normally get long odds as for some strange reason all my horses are bet down when they come on the track. The punters seem to know when my horses are fit and ready. But for me the odds are nothing, it is about winning, as winning is everything for myself and all trainers.
Which is the best horse you have trained?
The best horse I have trained in my career so far, I would say is New Kingston. New Kingston was a tough, hard knocking foreigner and was also a high claimer horse. During the time I had him in my stables, I was able to win two straight races with him. He was a nice horse and easy to train as well. He is the best horse, I have trained so far in my career and New Kingston gave me a lot of satisfaction. I would love to get more horses with the temperament of New Kingston.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
There have been so many good horses that have raced here at Caymanas Park over the years and it would difficult to choose one as they all performed so well in their era. I saw Legal Light and he was a very good horse as well, winning his races impressively while carrying top weight. Eros is another of the really good ones. Eros is a very great horse as whenever he is out there on the racetrack you could see the fire in his eyes and you can know that he is a competitor. For me, Borris McIntosh, Legal Light and Eros are my top two horses to have ever raced at Caymanas Park.
Who influenced your career the most?
I would say trainer Wayne DaCosta. He is the man that I admire a lot at the racetrack as he is the man that can get the job done. You have others like Richard Azan and those trainers and they are very good at bringing back horses after a break. They can bring horses back from long breaks and win the first time of asking.
