What if it happened in the US?
Dear Editor,
I cannot think of another time in modern history when the United States has openly called for the overthrow of a democratically elected Government as they are now doing with Venezuela.
While there are many cases of them influencing democratically elected governments (Guatemala 1954, Brazil 1964, Dominican Republic 1965, Chile 1973, and their role in our own Jamaica in 1980) just to name a few, they usually tried to be as covert as possible.
Francesco Rocco, president of the International Red Cross, at a press conference in Caracas, on February 8, 2019, said the situation in Venezuela was political and not humanitarian. He also pointed out that humanitarian help is always neutral.
We cannot understand why there has not been any condemnation by the secretary general of the United Nations as everything that the US has done against Venezuela ought to be against international law.
I wonder what would happen if Nancy Pelosi told the American people that Russia interfered in the 2016 election and the House of Representatives did not accept Donald Trump as president. She would swear herself in as president of the United States. She would also call on the people of the USA to take to the streets and abuse supporters of Trump. Imagine them burning vehicles and throwing Molotov cocktails at the police — creating the mayhem we see the US Government sanctioning on the people of Venezuela. She probably would be in prison before the end of the day.
The US has always wanted regime change in Venezuela since Hugo Chavez took power, but what is amazing is that the only election in Venezuela that the US considers free and fair is the one in which the Opposition won a majority in the national assembly.
