Now more than ever, people across the globe have found themselves trying to keep up with the changes in how we live, work and relate to one another.

With the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” slowly blurring the line between the physical, digital and biological sphere — schoolchildren, employees and business owners are now forced to think more futuristic as they seek to define their purpose in the global transformation that’s to come.

So how can businesses and individuals remain relevant to the technological revolution that’s unfolding?

Based on several studies conducted worldwide in different companies, Linda Hill believes that continuous innovation is the way to survive. A sought-after global expert on leadership and innovation, Hill is known for her thought-provoking presentations which highlight that innovation is not about solo genius, but, is usually among people who have different expertise and different point of view.

Referencing global companies such as Google, Hill will discuss how Jamaica’s public and private sectors can use heated constructive arguments to spur game-changing innovations, among other topics, at the annual Destination Experience Visionaries’ Summit on Friday, April 5 at the Spanish Court Hotel in New Kingston.

Listed as one of the top 10 management thinkers in the world by the globally recognised management resource, Thinkers50; Hill is confident that innovation is a journey of collaborative problem solving, often involving trial and error and mistakes, and is sometimes very scary.

She is among a list of more than 20 international and local speakers who will present at the Summit, which offers a multi-stakeholder environment for decision makers from around the world to connect and collaborate with their peers in untapped markets in a bid to drive economic growth and transformation.

A professor at the Harvard Business School, Hill has led discussions on how innovation is spurred out of three capabilities: creative abrasion, creative agility, and creative resolution.

Harvard Business School is the graduate school of business of Harvard University. For decades it is has been one of the world’s foremost institutions for business education, having graduated numerous global leaders and business luminaries including Michael Bloomberg, Ray Dalio, Jamie Dimon and Meg Whitman.

Hill argues that innovative organisations don’t go along to get along and they don’t let one group dominate, not even the boss. Instead, these organisations have developed a more inclusive decision-making process that allows more than one solution to arise.

The same is true for Jamaica, which improved three places in the Global Innovative Index 2018, to be ranked 81st out of 126 countries. The island recorded strengths in the categories of institution, human capital and research, market sophistication, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs.

But none of these were attained single-handedly. Successive governments along with the private sector body have worked consistently in getting the country to rank 10th in innovation across the Caribbean and Latin America region behind Chile, which through innovation, has started to diversify its economy.

Still, the Government of Jamaica and private sector alike have recognised that much more work needs to be done to keep up with today’s connected world which is increasingly driven by technology, communication, and superhuman intelligence.

This year’s summit will be held under the theme ‘Capital, Inclusiveness and Innovation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution’ and aims to highlight innovation as the solution to the challenges and global demands facing the world today.
