Portmore blank Dunbeholden to finish regular season on high

Champions Portmore United secured their 19th win of the regular season in the Red Stripe Premier League with a 2-0 blanking of Dunbeholden FC at the Spanish Town Prison Oval on Wednesday.

It was a fitting end for the champions who have registered back-to-back regular season titles under head coach Shavar Thomas.

Their goals were scored by schoolboys Lamar Walker of Clarendon College from a free kick in the first half and Earon Elliott of Jamaica College, who had a stoppage time tap in to complete the win.

The game began as nothing more than a Sunday stroll as the hosts had already wrapped up the preliminary title, while the visitors were virtually assured of survival in the league.

Except for one or two hard fouls and a couple of free kicks which Dunbeholden failed to make use of, the game had meandered along until Walker struck. His free kick from 23 yards took a wicked deflection off the wall before flying into the goal, leaving Giovanni Smith stranded.

Greame Green had a beautiful chance to draw his team level before the interval, but fired straight at Shaven Paul from point-blank range.

The second half was more of the same except for the last five minutes and stoppage time.

Dunbeholden were presented with a gilt-edged chance to score, but missed very late on. Second half substitute Shaquille Lewis should certainly have done better when Paul dropped the ball at his feet inside the goal area.

At the other end a focused Andre Lewis tricked his way past his marker before laying the ball on a platter for Elliot who simply could not miss from a yard out in the third minute of added time.

Dunbeholden, who propped up the league for most of the season, ended their maiden campaign in top flight football in 10th place on 33 points. They have earned the right to run with the big boys for a second season after a historic RSPL campaign where both promoted teams have avoided the drop.
