MoBay Community College cops first CCCJ title
ANGELS, St Catherine — Montego Bay Community College won their first Council of Community College of Jamaica’s (CCCJ) track and field and cheerleading championships, held at GC Foster Sports College in Angels, St Catherine.
Led by triple gold medallist Mickaell Moodie, who set new marks in the women’s 100m and 200m events, the Montego Bay–based institution piled up 215 points to dethrone last year’s winners Knox Community College, who ended on 201 points, while Moneague College was third with 162 points.
MBCC retained their women’s title with 147 points and were third in the men’s with 68 points.
“I am overwhelmed; it was a tremendous effort, there were a lot of challenges, but we overcame them, and that made it even sweeter,” said Delano Smith, the coach of the winning team.
Smith had high praises for the women’s team.
“We had 11 females, same number as last year, but they are true warriors and hats off to them,” he told the Jamaica Observer West.
The 17-year-old Moodie upstaged her teammate Hodecia Housen — who took the double last year — with times of 11.80 seconds in the 100m and 25.21 seconds, in the 200m.
Both Moodie and Housen ran identical 12.22 seconds to win their respective semi-final heats, but with medals on the line, Moodie took almost an entire second off both records; lowering the previous 100m mark of 12.71 second set in 2017 by Shanique McKenzie, and smashed the 26.11 seconds set last year by Housen.
Housen was second in the 100m in 12.17 seconds — also under the old record — and was third in the 200m.
The MBCC women won two of the three relay gold medals in record times, running 50.41 seconds to win the 4x100m and 23.62 seconds for the 4x400m relays.
Shanalee Reid won the women’s 400m in 1 minute 01.63 seconds, while Cadesha Smith won the women’s discus throw with 26.21m, and Yanique Nation won the javelin throw with 22.90m.
Paulette Watson and Reid were second and third respectively in the long jump, while Watson got a second silver medal in the high jump.
Khyle Sinclair took second place in the men’s discus throw, while Kishaun Douglas was third in the men’s 400m in 51.68 seconds.
