Education ministry seeks to clarify report on $20m donation for JC stadium
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information says the $20 million that was committed by former education minister Ruel Reid as a contribution towards the development of a track stadium at Jamaica College has not yet been transferred to the institution.
Reid, who is also the principal of Jamaica College, was seconded to the Government in 2016 but was dismissed last week amid allegations of corruption at the ministry.
Last month, Prime Minister Andrew Holness announced that the Government had contributed a total of $30 million to the Ashenheim Stadium on the grounds of Jamaica College, through the Sports Development Foundation and the Education Ministry.
However, the ministry, in a statement yesterday, noted that the school has only been in receipt of the $10 million donated through the Sports Development Foundation, as the remaining $20 million, which was to be funded by the Education Ministry, was put on hold.
“On the instructions of the prime minister, this planned contribution was halted as a review of the ministry’s systems and programmes continue,” the ministry said.
It explained that: “As part of the review process, the ministry is assessing all requested, proposed or planned expenditure of this nature.”
The ministry said Jamaica College was also the beneficiary of a grant, which was used for repairs of the school’s infrastructure.
