Don Almighty for Monday Morning Trophy feature
Back at the races in just seven days after releasing his maiden tag, the Anthony Nunes-trained talented bay colt Don Almighty is set to take on rivals in what should be another romp in the Monday Morning Trophy feature at Caymanas Park today.
Don Almighty, a half-brother to Dontae, made his debut on March 23 over six furlongs (1,200m) and won by five lengths in a good 1:14.3, without breaking any sweat in the stroll.
Don Almighty didn’t face much in terms of quality in that first run, but gave the distinct impression that he is going to prefer racing longer with the seven furlongs (1,400m) of this trophy race, the right journey for him at this stage.
The Casual Trick offspring should get home ahead of Sentient, Sweet Like Sugar, and first-time starter — the imported Sparkle Diamond from the barn of Paul Charlton.
The Monday Morning is for three-year-old non-winners of two and maiden imported horses. The race has a scheduled post time of 4:05 pm as the seventh event on the 10-race card, with first race at 12:30 pm.
Don Almighty, like in his first start, is not racing against much here and does have a glorious chance of making it two from two. And, based on how he performs today, trainer Anthony Nunes would know if Don Almighty is ready to compete in the 2000 Guineas on April 14. Champion jockey Anthony Thomas replaces Linton Steadman in the saddle.
Chestnut colt Sentient did well to finish fourth in the Prince Consort Stakes on March 16 over seven furlongs. He was 7 ¼ lengths behind Toona Cilita in a time of 1:25.4 minutes, in which he finished the race in 1:27.1 minutes.
The trip today remains the same and Sentient should have no problems whatsoever and, having stripped fitter and with Dane Nelson retaining the ride, his chances of are good.
Sweet Like Sugar comes into this race on the back of a victory on February 16. She didn’t beat much in Soul Cure by a head going five and a half furlongs (1,100m) in 1:07.3. If Sweet Like Sugar is going to win here, then she has to improve a lot from her last race, though she is expected to run well nonetheless. Note: The blinkers are on.
Nothing outstanding to recommend for this American-bred Sparkle Diamond more than he is burning up the exercise track in the mornings. Given the fact that Shane Ellis has been called upon to do the riding honours, the connections are confident in Sparkle Diamond‘s ability.
The remainder of the field is made up of Seadon, Summer Sun, Princess Annie and Roy Rogers.
Also on tap is the top-rated Overnight Allowance event going seven and a half furlongs (1,500m) for three-year-olds and upward. Included in the field of 15 runners is top local two-year-old from last season Run Thatcher Run, as he prepares for the 2000 Guineas.
Run Thatcher Run opened his three-year-old career last week with a three-length win going six furlongs in 1:12.3 minutes, but he faces his toughest test to date here and will have to put every hoof right in this one. Run Thatcher Run can win this one as he is talented, but to do so against the likes of Master Of Hall, Dysfunctional , My Elle Belle and Saratoga Sight he has to show significant improvement and, even with that improvement, every stride he makes after the gates open must be perfect.
