D-Day for RSPL semi-final hopefuls
Mount Pleasant FA and University of the West Indies (UWI) will be seeking to confirm their semi-final berth when they lock horns in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) second-leg play-off fixture at Drax Hall today at 3:30 pm.
Both teams will enter the contest on level pegging following a 2-2 stalemate in their first-leg contest at the Anthony Spalding Sports Complex last week.
The encounter is once again expected to be a mouth-watering showpiece as victory for either team will see them joining defending champions Portmore United and last year’s beaten finalists Waterhouse FC in the semi-finals.
Mount Pleasant will again start slight favourites, having defeated the opponents in three meetings this season, and with home court advantage now also in their favour, they could prove tough to oppose.
The promoted St Ann-based team, which was formed in 2016, made a meteoric rise in the nation’s top flight league and victory today, could see them reinforcing their chances as a genuine title contender.
In their three meeting with the UWI, Mount Pleasant registered 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0 score lines and with things being all square heading into this their fifth meeting, they could make it four from five.
The Donovan Duckie-conditioned team will expect much from Francois Swaby, Cordel Benbow, Kemar Beckford, and Daniel Green to make it happen.
However, UWI FC will also be favouring their chances of progressing to the semi-finals and rightly so, as they possess enough quality to leave the St Ann team and its large support base disappointed, having shown that they can better any team on their day.
The deceptive Ryan Miller, Akeem Thenstead, Rochane Smith and Anthony Greenland are a few of those expected to be major players to the Andrew Peart-coached team’s chances of pulling a fast one against Mount Pleasant.
Meanwhile, Arnett Gardens will have a daunting task of overturning a 0-3 deficit against the youthful Rudolph Speid-coached Cavalier team, who will be riding high on confidence heading into the return-leg fixture.
They are scheduled to meet tomorrow at 8:35 pm at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium.
Jerome Waite and his Arnett Gardens team will have to work overtime in both departments to stay alive, as Cavalier are by no means expected to be complacent.
