Shantae Foreman completes golden double
Excelsior High’s Shantae Foreman won her second gold medal of the 109th ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships by winning the Class Two high jump on Saturday’s final day of the five-day competition and continued her unbeaten run in the high jump.
She had won the Class Two long jump on Thursday with 6.14 metres.
Foreman, who has won at every level, cleared 1.73m, Herbert Morrison’s Daniella Anglin took the silver medal and Excelsior High’s Daniel Hinds got the bronze, both clearing 1.70m.
Foreman started jumping at 1.65m and needed just one attempt to clear each of the next three heights, passed on 1.76m but failed at 1.81m when she was the only athlete remaining in the competition.
Anglin also entered the competition at 1.65m, clearing it on her first attempt as well as 1.70m, but failed at 1.73m.
Hinds also cleared 1.60m and 1.65m on her first try but took two jumps to clear 1.70m.
Holmwood Technical’s Susan Francis ended her Champs career by defending her Class One long jump title, reaching 6.26m (0.9m/s), and beating Edwin Allen’s Lotavia Brown with 6.04m ((1.4m/s) and Hydel’s Rhianna Phipps, who medalled in all three jumps taking the bronze with 5.73m (0.7m/s).
Francis dominated the competition with a big opening mark of 6.12m (-0.2m/s) and after two fouls, started the second round with 6.26m.
Hydel High’s Sashanti Hinds took the Class Three long jump title with a best mark of 5.94m (0.4m/s) to beat St Jago High’s Kay-lagay Clarke with 5.68m (-0.6m/s), as Immaculate Conception’s Onanda Lowe took the bronze with 5.59m (-0.2m/s).
Vere Technical’s Marie Forbes made up for her disappointing finish in the discus on Wednesday by winning the Class One shot put Saturday with a best mark of 13.94m, overtaking Immaculate Conception’s Danielle Sloley, who led through the first three rounds but took silver with 13.56m with Rusea’s High’s Aliesha Shaw taking third with 13.45m.
