KC accepts C’bar apology over ‘vulgar’ chant
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Principal of Kingston College (KC) Dave Myrie this morning accepted an apology from Calabar High School for hurling vulgar chants at students of the North Street institution.
A handful of students accompanied Calabar’s Acting Principal Calvin Rowe, who made the public apology during a joint devotion held this morning at KC.
The arrangement was made during a meeting with the Ministry of Education officials and administrators of Calabar after a video recording of the chants, which occurred during the school’s devotion on Monday morning, went viral.
The video shows boys in khaki uniform wearing Calabar epaulettes chanting vulgar slurs about KC which, on Saturday, ended Calabar’s seven-year reign of the annual ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ Championship at the National Stadium in St Andrew.
Rowe said: “the behaviour showed by a pocket of our students was outright abhorrent and is in no way encouraged or tolerated by the Calabar school community.
“Our presence here this morning not only falls on the heels of the soft copy of the apology that was sent to Principal Myrie on Monday but it also serves to cement our commitment to restoration and healing.”
Rowe assured that his school’s administration has already begun and is in an advanced state of identifying the genesis of “this disgraceful act”.
“Friends, brothers, I apologise on behalf of our school for the disgrace shown by some of our students and trust that together we can find ways to move beyond this quickly, not just for our schools but for our country,” he said.
Rowe also congratulated Kingston College on their victory in recently concluded ISSA/ Gracekennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Chamionships.
