SATURDAY’S incident involving the police in Trinidad and Tobago and reggae singer Buju Banton was not expected to impact his performance at Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain last night.

Buju Banton, who was in the twin-island republic for the third leg of his Long Walk to Freedom tour, had his hotel room searched by cops, who indicated they were in possession of a warrant. It was later revealed that the search was not ordered by the authorities.

A source close to the artiste told the Jamaica Observer that the incident left the artiste incensed and upset initially as he felt violated, but that only lasted for a short time as he was more focused on putting on a good show for his supporters.

T&T’s Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith visited with the Grammy-winning reggae artiste to personally apologise and has promised to launch an investigation into the incident.

On Saturday Buju Banton took to Instagram to share the experience.

“I’m chilling in my hotel room and the cops came to check me. A whole bunch of them. Saying they got a warrant to search my room. I’m here in Trinidad; got love for the people. Here with my band. Just want you to know, no matter what, they can’t break us. We see what’s going on and we just want you to know what’s going on. We see what they’re planning,” he said in a video posted to his Instagram account.

“How can you obtain a search warrant for a hotel room on a Saturday?” Buju Banton questioned. “We still got love for you, Trinidad. They can’t distract us. That’s why we’re here. For you, not them,” he concluded.

Buju Banton was released for a United States prison last December after serving an eight-year sentence on drug trafficking charges.
