Draw enough to push Cambridge into Sandals Major League semis
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Promoted Cambridge FC secured their place in the semi-finals of the St James Football Association Sandals Resorts International Major League despite being held 2-2 by resurgent Montego Bay Boys Club in their Zone Two game at the UDC Field earlier this week.
Cambridge FC, who were one of three clubs promoted at the end of last season, inched to the lead on 16 points and can only be overtaken by second-placed Heights FC for the top spot in the zone at the end of the regular season, while Boys Club’s hopes are all but ended after the draw.
Cambridge FC lead with 16 points, one more than Heights FC and three more than Boys Club, all from nine games with one more to go.
Montego Bay Boys Club came into the game with a head of steam having won their previous games after going winless for the previous six, took the lead in the sixth minute when Donovan Gayle fired them ahead.
Goals from Shaquille West in the 27th minute and Obrien Bent with his league-leading eighth goal in the 45th minute, however, gave Cambridge FC the lead at half-time, but Anthony Drummond responded for Boys Club in the 77th minute to salvage a point for them.
Bogue FC snapped a long winless run with a 3-0 win over MoBay City FC in the Zone Two game at the UDC field on Tuesday, as Christopher Johnson scored two goals and Sanjay Patterson got the other, all three coming in a 10-minute span in the first half.
Today, Lilliput Rovers, leaders in Zone One, will complete their first round schedule when they face Catherine Hall FC at the UDC field in a return-round game set to start at 3:30 pm.
Lilliput Rovers have secured their spot in the semi-finals and should beat Catherine Hall for the second time this season after winning the first game 3-0.
They are on 21 points and cannot be passed by any of the three other teams chasing them for the second spot.
Violet Kickers are in second place on 15 points and a win in their remaining game against contenders Melbourne Mind Game would see them advance along with Lilliput Rovers.
Melbourne Mind Game and Irwin FC, who have winless Seba FC, are on 14 points.
