FULL SPEED AHEAD
GLASGOW, Scotland — After arriving here late Saturday night with other members of the team, Reggae Girlz fitness coach Will Hitzelberger yesterday launched his campaign to get the players recovered from the jetlag.
With two full training sessions already lost to travelling, Hitzelberger is charged with getting the Hue Menzies-coached team up and running ahead of another important friendly contest against Scotland here tomorrow.
That contest will be the last competitive encounter in the Reggae Girlz preparation phase before they fly over to Lyon, France, for a pre-tournament camp ahead of their historic bow at the June 7-July 7 Fifa Women’s World Cup.
So, in his usual efficient manner, Hitzelberger got the ball rolling, ensuring that recovery of the players was a matter of priority following gruelling travel arrangements that took them from Miami to north African nation of Morocco, connecting to London Heathrow before arriving here.
“It’s the worst travel I have ever been a part of. It forces some days off and this morning (yesterday) we came and gave them (the players) some options. Some players just rolled and stretched, some players felt good and just came and got a workout in, so it’s just about managing as always,” Hitzelberger told the Jamaica Observer.
“Each one of these players come from different backgrounds, so like I said some were ready to go this morning, some slept during the travels and some felt pretty good. Actually, I would say the majority of them felt pretty good; there are only a few that really are not feeling right yet,” he added. While showing his appreciation for the response of the players, Hitzelberger noted that more work will be required before arriving at full recovery.
That left the man, whose job it is to prepare each player to perform at her optimal concerned that a single on field session, scheduled for yesterday evening, might not suffice.
“We just needed to move this morning so that when we get to the field this afternoon, it is not the first time we have moved in three days.
“So I am impressed with how everybody is feeling; I think that everybody kind of manage their sleep well. There are some players who struggled with their sleep last night but I am expecting some improvements and that will depend on how they take the field this evening (yesterday),” he added. “We only get a session in tonight (last night) and a walk though tomorrow (today); obviously not ideal, we missed two training sessions, one when we left and one here. So hopefully we don’t pay the price for that,” Hitzelberger ended.
