Ja’roy flaunts it
With almost 10 years of recording under his belt, rapper Ja’roy knows the importance of being positive whenever he records a song. He got that special feeling when cutting Flaunt That , his latest single.
“I strongly believe this song can make the pop chart and give me a breakthrough. I try to keep that mindset for every song I write, but this one in particular has three talented artistes who gave three different styles that complement each other. So I think it’ll be interesting to see how far it will go,” said the Maryland-born artiste.
Canadian rapper Tory Lanez and Jamaican deejay Honorebel are the other acts on Flaunt That, which is produced by Ugandan Herbert Skillz. According to Ja’roy, it was Honorebel who spearheaded the project.
“Honorebel was the one who gave me the Tory Lanez track. Of course, there was a bit of paperwork to go with it, but he was initially going to use the song for himself and his own project,” said Ja’roy. “But when I first met him, he was impressed with my music and was eager to work with me, so he decided to make the track my own and have him feature on it instead.”
Ja’roy is in good company on Flaunt That.
Tory Lanez, whose parents are from Barbados and Curacao, has several pop hit songs to his name including LA Confidential and Say It. He has worked with Sean Kingston, Justin Bieber and Drake.
Honorebel is popular in South Florida circles, Europe, and parts of Africa.
Growing up in Maryland, Ja’roy (born Jordan Weekes) recalls his Jamaican parents playing “straight Caribbean music”in their home. His influences, who include Kanye West, J Cole, Lil Wayne, Sean Paul and Elephant Man, reflect the diversity of his surroundings.
“In Maryland, the music scene started off as rap/hip-hop. Go-go is a big thing in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia)area, so a lot of people were making their own bands, but as of today, it’s become a lot more rap/trap-based,” he explained.
Ja’roy’s previous songs include Rumors (with deejay Iyara) and Friday Night.
